Time for a new school year! Our school children need to be covered with prayer. Just as the cities of old had walls around them for protection against the enemies, may our prayers be a wall of protection for our boys and girls when they tread the “war-zones” of school. Every child needs to be protected by walls of prayer and a covering of peace. All through the school year we need to provide our children and youth with fervent prayers for their protection.
I have made a heart that will remind us. Print the heart. Have it laminated or cover it with contact paper and put the heart some place where you will see it daily. I put mine on the mirror in the bathroom. When I’m getting ready for the day in the mornings, I cover my grandchildren with prayer.
Protection for the eyes
There are so many things that call for their attention, so many unworthy things to look at. Let’s pray that they keep their eyes fixed on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2).
Protection for the tongue
Let’s pray that the words they speak be pleasing to God (Psalm 19:14). Here is a good prayer for any of us: “Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3).
Protection for the ears
Let’s pray they don’t listen to gossip and idle talk but learn to listen to God’s voice so they can make the right choices (James 1:19-21).
Protection for the hands
It’s easy for children to get into fist-fights. Let’s pray that they use their hands to faithfully do their work and to show kindness to others. This is applicable to all of us: “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:17).
Protection for the feet
Let’s pray that they keep their feet from every evil path and obey God’s word, that they don’t listen to misguided advice and go to places that are not pleasing to God (Psalm 119:101, 105).
Protection for the heart
Let’s pray that above all else, they guard their heart, “for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23). In the picture above the heart surrounds the mind, the tongue, the eyes, the ears, the hands and the feet. Let’s pray they have a tender heart towards God. Here is a good prayer for the heart:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
