Hunger for the Presence of God

There is nothing more important than the presence and power of God in our lives. God’s servant Moses recognized this. Without God’s presence he did not want to move on.

“If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.” Exodus 33:15

Without God’s presence we are lost. God showed his presence in a glorious and visible way to the people of Israel, in pillars of cloud and fire. That’s what today’s story is about.

Read about the “pillars” in Exodus 13:17-22.

From the beginning of the journey to the Promised Land God guided his people with the pillars of cloud and fire. When the Egyptian army followed them, God made the pillar double-sided. In the story, Eleazar admires the cloud. He is amazed by what happens when the cloud separates Israel and Egypt. For Israel there was light, but for the Egyptians there was darkness (Exodus 14:19,20).

Israel had the presence of God visible in the cloud and the fire. Without the presence of God Moses did not want to move forward. “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here,” was his prayer.

The boys and girls that left Egypt with Moses saw the wonder of the pillars of cloud and of fire. How I wish that the boys and girls who are following The Great Escape story will desire to have God’s presence and power in their lives! I wish for us all to have hunger for God and his presence.

I have a burning desire in my heart to live continually in the presence of God, to the point that it shows. When Moses spent time with God on the mountain his face was shining, so much that he had to put a veil on (Exodus 34:29-35). Oh, that we may shine for Jesus!

In the New Testament, after the lame beggar had been healed and Peter and John were being examined by the Council, those authority people were astonished at their boldness, but then they recognized that Peter and John had been with Jesus (see Acts 4:1-22).

Oh, the presence of God! Oh, that people would see in us that we have been with Jesus! The pillars of cloud and fire was an unmistakable presence of God with the people of Israel. Today we have the continual presence of God through his Holy Spirit. May the Holy Spirit and fire ignite us to win the world for Jesus. Let’s be on fire for Jesus! Let’s hunger for the presence of God!

This month is the celebration of 70 years since Israel was declared a nation. The caravan of millions, guided by Moses and Aaron, were on their way to the country that now is Israel. I will be writing something about this on my personal blog: kelund.wordpress.com.

For today’s story there is an activity to do the pillars. There are pillars with the Bible verse and also blank, so the children can write the verse themselves.

Enjoy it!
