Deeds of kindness in the Bible

ABIGAIL — 1 Samuel 25:14-19, 32-35
She kindly prepared food for David and his men when her husband would not give them any provisions.

BARNABAS – Acts 9:27; 11:22-26
He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith. He brought Saul to the apostles and gave a good report about him after his conversion. Later he went to Tarsus to bring Saul to Antioch.

BOY – John 6:9
He shares his lunch of five small barley loves and two small fish with Jesus, who then multiplied it to feed five thousand men, not counting the women and the children.

CORNELIUS – Acts 10:4
He gave gifts to the poor. He and his family were gentiles that received the Gospel and were baptized.

DAVID – 1 Samuel 24:17
He treated King Saul well and spared his life, even thought the King sought to kill him.

DAVID – 2 Samuel 9:1-13
He asked if there was someone left of the house of Saul to whom he could show God’s kindness. He the invited Jonathan’s crippled son Mephibosheth to eat at his table, and he restored to him all the land that had belonged to Saul.

EPAPHRAS – Colossians 4:12,13
He was a servant of Christ that wrestled in prayer for the Colossians that they may stand firm in the will of God.

EPAPHRODITUS – Philippians 2:25
He came to visit Paul to take care of his needs.

ESTHER – Esther 4:12-16
She put her life on the line to save the Jews from a death sentence.

GAIUS – Romans 16:23
Paul and the whole church in Rome enjoyed his hospitality.

JESUS – John 13:1-17
By washing the disciples feet he showed them the full extent of his love. He did not come to be served but to serve. By this act of kindness he showed them –and us—to do even the most humble act in devotion to others.

They traveled with Jesus and supported him out of their own means.

JOB’S FRIENDS – Job 2:11-13
When these friends heard of the misfortunes of Job they went to sympathize with him and to comfort him.

JONATHAN – 1 Samuel 19:1-6; 20:42
He spoke well of David to his father, King Saul that was out to kill David. He defended him and helped him escape.

JOSEPH – Genesis 50:19-21
Joseph reassured his brothers that he forgave them for selling him off to Egypt as a young boy, and he spoke kindly to them.
JOSEPH OF ARIMATEA – Matthew 27:57-60
He buried Jesus in his own personal grave.

LUKE – Colossians 4:14; 2 Timothy 4:11
The doctor, Paul’s dear friend. He was the only one with him according to his letter to Timothy.

LYDIA – Acts 16:11-15
She persuaded Paul and his travel companions to stay at her house in Philippi.

MARTHA – Luke 10:38
She opened her house to Jesus.

MARY – John 12:3; Mark 14:8
She anointed Jesus with a costly perfume. “She did what she could.”

MARY MADGDALENE – Luke 23:55-24:10
Together with other women she prepared spices and perfumes for the body of Christ. She became the first witness of the resurrection.

She was the most privileged woman, to get to raise the Son of God. She treasured everything about Jesus in her heart.

MIRIAM – Exodus 2:7
As a kind big sister she watched over her little brother (Moses) that was put in a basket in the river in hopes of saving his life. When the princess discovered the baby, Miriam offered the princess to go get a nurse for her brother.

NEHEMIAH – Nehemiah 5:19
Led the Israelites in rebuilding the walls in Jerusalem.

NICODEMUS – John 19:39,40
He provided 75 pounds of aloe and myrrh for Jesus’ burial.

PERSIS – Romans 16:12
She was a woman who worked very hard for the Lord.

PHOEBE – Romans 16:1,2
A very helpful servant of the church in Cenchrea.

PRISCILA & AQUILA – Acts 18:26
They invited Apollos to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.

PRISCILA & AQUILA – Romans 16:3,4
They risked their lives for Paul, their fellow worker.

RUTH – Ruth 2:11,12
Showed kindness to her mother-in-law.

SIMON PETER – Luke 5:3
Let Jesus use his boat.

SHUNAMMITE WOMAN – 2 Kings 4:8-10
She invited the prophet Elisha to stop by and eat and then had a room made for him to stay in when he was in the area.

STEPHANAS HOUSEHOLD – 1 Corinthians 16:15
They devoted themselves to the service of the saints.

TABITHA – Acts 9:36
Was always doing good and helping the poor.

TIMOTHY – Philippians 2:19-22
As a son with his father he served Paul in the work of the Gospel. Paul said he has no one else like him.

TRYPHENA & TRYPHOSA – Romans 16:12
Women who worked hard in the Lord.

TYCHICUS –Colossians 4:7; Ephesians 6:21,22
A faithful servant, that encouraged the saints.

WIDOW AT ZAREPHATH – 1 Kings 17:7-16
She willingly used the last of her oil and flour to make a cake of bread for the prophet Elijah. God then multiplied her supply so there was enough to eat during the famine.

As a final word on the subject of doing deeds of kindness:

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32).
